THREE non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the partners of Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) Excellent Star Project, under its Local Agenda 21 Kuala Lumpur (LA21) programme.
They are Yayasan Muamalat Belia, Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (Yawa) and Sentul National Schools Parent-Teacher Asssociation Collaboration.
The project’s first four partners are YTL Land and Development Berhad, DBKL, Education Ministry and the Kuala Lumpur Education Department.
First started in 2008, the project’s objective was to offer students a hollistic approach to expand their talents to achieve excellence.
Deputy Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk M. Saravanan, who launched the LA21 “Prosperous City” project, said LA21 was a result of an agreement signed in 1992 between 179 countries to address environmental, social, development and economy issues.
“The ministry supports the programme because it is an effort to develop hollistic individuals,” Saravanan said.
From the eight schools in Sentul involved in the project, the number has now increased to 20 in Kuala Lumpur with the focus on schools with most number of students from poor families.
Several activities have already been organised under the project this year including the Eco Drum Circle “EDC For Unity” environmental artistic camp, UPSR workshop and Early Education Parenting seminar.
DBKL mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail said the project’s highlight, which is the Mayor’s Challenge Trophy, was won by SM Convent Sentul which received RM5,000.
SJK (Cina) Chi Man received RM3,000 as the first runner-up while second runner-up SK La Salle (1) Sentul got RM2,000.
The event also saw 96 students who excelled in their UPSR, PMR and SPM examinations receive certificates and cash of RM200, RM500 and RM700 each respectively.
SJK (Tamil) St Joseph librarian Tillarasi Sethu was also awarded the Pelajar Harapan Award and RM200 for scoring 7As in the UPSR trial examination as well as wining the Anugerah Nilam at the Kuala Lumpur level and being active in extra curricular activities.
The Parent-Teacher Asssociation (PTA) Special Award went to SK La Salle Sentul 2 along with RM1,000 for the school’s excellent management, PTA’s commitment and initiative in helping improve the students’ and school’s achievements as well as being actively involved in LA21.

WINNING the Mayor’s Challenge Trophy in the Bintang Cemerlang project for the third year in the row is not due to luck but hard work for SMK Convent Sentul in Kuala Lumpur.
School principal Tan Tee Hwa said the students were spirited and obedient and credit to should also go to the dedicated teachers.
She said the school was small, with a small field shared with the neighbouring SJK (T) St Joseph which won the Highest Potential School award.
Tan said some of the prize money of RM5,000 would be given to the teachers while the rest would be used to upgrade the school.
SJK (T) St Joseph principal N. Kaveriammah said to produce high achievers, commitment and involvement of teachers, students and parents was a must.
“We hold meetings with the parents every month to discuss the academic progress of their children.
“Usually about 80% of the parents will turn up and this is encouraging,” she said.
She added that winning the award would put the small school on the map and the RM1,000 cash would be put to good use.
SMK Sri Pantai emerged as the first runner-up for the project and received RM3,000 while SJK (C) Chi Man took home RM2,000 as the second runner-up.
A total of 20 schools were part of the project under the Local Agenda 21 Kuala Lumpur (LA21) project partnered by YTL Land and Development Bhd, DBKL, Education Ministry, Kuala Lumpur Education Department, Yayasan Muamalat Belia, Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (Yawa) and Sentul National Schools Parent-Teacher Association Collaboration.
Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said LA21 was the result of an agreement signed in 1992 with 179 countries to address environmental, social, development and economy issues.
“With LA21, the capital is a medium in our efforts to make Kuala Lumpur a world-class city by 2020. This smart partnership concept between the governmental agencies, private sector and public is important,” he said during his speech at the prize-giving ceremony.
The project’s objective was to offer students a holistic approach to expand their talents to achieve excellence.
Several activities including camps, workshops and seminars were organised under the project that is in its fourth year.
Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd (SRSB) executive director Datuk Seri Michael Yeoh said the average age of the population was 26 years.
“With that kind of statistics, if we do not invest in young people, who are we going to invest in? More cities are becoming dead because the focus is only on business and entertainment while community, education and such are set aside,” he said.
SRSB executive director Datuk Hamidah Maktar said the company’s involvement in the project was more than just a corporate social responsibility fulfilment but an important part of its Sentul Raya Urban Renewal project.
“This project will transform Sentul into a modern and dynamic area through the development of the local community,” she said.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail was also on hand to present the prizes to the more than 100 high achievers.

DBKL director-general Datuk Salleh Yusup said the smart partnership plan with companies was important to achieve a world-class city status.
The Housing and Local Government Ministry, with assistance from the Economic Planning Unit and the United Nations Development Programme, launched the LA 21 pilot project in 2000 with local councils in Petaling Jaya, Kuantan and Kuching.
The DBKL joined the list of 53 new councils included in the project in 2005.
Salleh said he hoped YTL could spread their generosity to other schools in KL as well.
“There are 300 schools in the city and if one corporation can sponsor 10 schools as part of their corporate social responsibility programme, it will be good,” he added.
YTL Corporation Deputy managing director Datuk Yeoh Seok Kian said the company would like to play a pivotal role in the lives of future leaders in Sentul.
SMK Convent Sentul headmistress Phoon Yoke Meng said the school also won the title last year and that the number of students who excelled had increased.
She said the programme was a boost for the students’ spirit.
